On the August 5th issue, the weekly magazine Famiglia Cristiana, one of the leading newsmagazines in Italy (circulation: 800.000 copies/week) published an article on Sir Edmund Hillary, conquerer of the Everest and first man ever to drove a vehicle to the South Pole during the AGY-IPY 1957-58. Hillary was co-leader of the Commonwealth TransAntarctic Expedition (TAE) with Bunny Fuchs, who crossed Antarctica from the Weddell sea to the Ross sea in 99 days. Hillary drove from Ross Island up the Skelton glacier, through the Transantarctic Mountains, then across the polar plateau to the Pole, where he arrived on January 4th, 1958.
